How do you know what kind of waste is being excavated?

There are, or were, some 60 gasworks waste sites around NSW, and the process of excavation and disposal is both standard and systematic. The material will be dug up section by section and placed into bays. Sampling of the excavated materials will then be undertaken and sent to an independent analytical laboratory for classification. Based on the results, the material will be placed on a truck and transported to one of several appropriate NSW EPA-licenced waste facilities.
