Events at the Cutaway approvals and requirements

Outdoor events at Barangaroo are delivered under the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008.  This policy provides the conditions that events are to comply with in order to proceed without a development approval from the City of Sydney. Where events exceed these conditions a separate development approval is required.

A development approval (D/2015/938) has been issued by the City of Sydney for events hosted in the Cutaway which exceed the conditions of the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008.

For events operating under this development approval there are a number of requirements around the type of event, its operating hours and noise emissions. A summary can be found below:

  • Bump-in and bump-out may be undertaken at any time, but must be inaudible to residents between 10.00pm and 7.00am.
  • Event categories have been created to manage the potential noise impacts of various types of events. Please refer to the determination for the complete requirements of the use of the Cutaway for events.

Event Categories

Planned category 1: Major events with potential high noise impact – permitted four times per calendar year plus New Year’s Eve.  These can take place any day of the week between 7.00am until midnight. New Year’s Eve events are permitted until 2.00am.

Planned category 2: Medium scale events with potential medium noise impact – permitted six times per calendar year, any day of the week between 10.00am and 10.00pm.

Planned category 3: Events with low to medium potential noise impact – permitted any day of the week between 8.00am and 6.00pm, but must not exceed background noise levels by more than 5db.

Planned category 4: Events with low to medium potential noise impact – permitted 15 times per calendar year, any day of the week with a maximum of five hours of event duration, between 10.00am and 11.00pm.
